Diet composition and biomass consumption of harbour seals in Telemark and Aust-Agder, Norwegian Skagerrak

To explore ecosystem dynamics and functions it is vital to obtain knowledge on predator–prey relations. Harbour seals are piscivorous predators that can come into conflict with fisheries. Recently, as the Skagerrak and Kattegat population of harbour seals has increased, claims have emerged that seals are depleting coastal cod populations. The diet of harbour seals in Norwegian Skagerrak was investigated based on otolith identification from scats. The overall seal diet included 20 different fish species/groups. Complementary methods assessing short and long-term prey of a marine top predator ‒ Application to the grey seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea.

The growing grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) population in the Baltic Sea has created conflicts with local fisheries, comparable to similar emerging problems worldwide. Adequate information on the foraging habits is a requirement for responsible management of the seal population. Effect of diet composition on acid–base balance in adolescents, young adults and elderly at rest and during exercise

Diets rich in animal protein and cereal grains and deficient in vegetables and fruits may cause low-grade metabolic acidosis, which may impact exercise and health. Diel feeding habits of juveniles of Mullus surmuletus (Linneo, 1758) in the lagoon of the Stagnone di Marsala (Western Sicily, Italy)

Diet composition, feeding rhythm, gastric evacuation rate and daily ration were investigated in juvenile Mulhis surmuletus (Linneo, 1758). Fish were collected in the lagoon of the Stagnone di Marsala in western Sicily, in July 1995, during a 24 h sampling period. Copepoda, Polychaeta, Amphipoda and Tanaidacea were shown to be the most frequent prey items. The feeding index values showed two different daily feeding times. A unimodal trend in the daily rhythm of food consumption was derived, with a peak in feeding between 1200 and 2000 h. Analysis of Prey Composition in Eurasian Reed Warblers' Acrocephalus scirpaceus Droppings at Four Breeding Sites in Italy

Our aim was to investigate the among-populations diversity of prey composition in Eurasian Reed Warblers’ diets via their droppings, both to assess the ecological validity of this sampling method and to test whether the prey species most abundant in fecal samples were also the most present in the Italian study site. We collected fecal samples at four sites throughout Italy, for a total of 144 samples. Within reedbeds, the breeding habitat of the Eurasian Reed Warbler, we also collected arthropods by carrying out entomological sweepings at one of the study sites.
